The T S Eliot School Shadowing Scheme 2008

The T S Eliot Shadowing Scheme 2008

Every year the Poetry Book Society awards the T S Eliot prize for Poetry, described by The Times as ‘poetry’s most coveted award’. Ten collections of poetry, published that year, are shortlisted.

The shadowing scheme, run in partnership with emagazine, enables students to take part in shadowing the judges of this year’s prize.

The T S Eliot Shortlist 2008

Judges Andrew Motion (Chair), Lavinia Greenlaw and Tobias Hill have chosen the following 10 collections:

Moniza Alvi Europa Bloodaxe
Peter Bennet The Glass Swarm Flambard
Ciaran Carson For All We Know Gallery Books
Robert Crawford Full Volume Jonathan Cape
Maura Dooley Life Under Water Bloodaxe
Mark Doty Theories and Apparitions Jonathan Cape
Jen Hadfield Nigh-No-Place Bloodaxe
Mick Imlah The Lost Leader Faber
Glyn Maxwell Hide Now Picador
Stephen Romer Yellow Studio Carcanet

NOTE:

The poem 'To The Sea', which was included in Maura Dooley's download in error, has been replaced by the poem 'Mummy.' Shadowing Scheme entries using either 'To The Sea' or 'Mummy' will still be accepted. We apologise for the mistake.

How the Shadowing Scheme Works

Simply click on the relevant collection above to download three poems from each of the shortlisted collections. Also included are some brief biographical notes for each poet.

Students can take part in a nationwide student poll, by recording their individual choice on the emagazine website at www.emagazine.org.uk. Individuals students can also enter a student writing competition by writing a 500 word rationale for their choice of poet, based on the sample poems. The rationale should be sent by email to barbara@englishandmedia.co.uk by the closing date of Monday 8 December 2008.

A teachers’ guide is also available from the emagazine website at www.emagazine.org.uk.
